Needles are thin-spiked weapons, generally used to pierce and stab. An example of a very powerful Needle is the Black March, although it has been made clear it is not the strongest needle.
One reason the needle is the most basic weapon in the Tower is that piercing and thrusting attacks receive less Shinsu Resistance, and are technically better adapted to move in Shinsu. Weapons such as sword will have to break through more Shinsu due to having a greater surface area.[1][2]
Needles are commonly used by Fishermen[3] and Scouts[citation needed].
The Ari Family is known to use Needles in combat.[4]
